على مدى السنة الماضية نمت ظاهرة جديدة من مجرد أداة لبث أنباء قصيرة يراها البعض أنها تافهة، إلى ظاهرة عالمية كادت أن تطيح بإحدى حكومات دول المنطقة. بدأت «تويتر» في صيف عام 2006 واليوم تضم أكثر من 100 مليون مستخدم من ضمنهم صحافيون وكتاب ومعلقون لبث أحدث مساهماتهم. على الرغم من العمر القصير لخدمة التدوين المصغرة هذه.
