منذ انطلاقها في عام 1979 بذلت الثورة الإسلامية في إيران جهدها للحفاظ على نوع من التوازن في سياساتها. ومع ذلك، بقيت تجسّد مثالاً كلاسيكياً حياً عن بلد لم يستطع التصالح مع نفسه، ما يجعلها تشكّل تحدياً كبيراً لدول الخليج الساعية إلى إيجاد الطريقة المثلى للتعامل مع جارتها الشمالية.

مبعوث خليجي خاص للسلام

ما أن تقول «خطاب أوباما» حتى يعرف العالم العربي كله عما تتحدث، وإن لم تذكر المكان أو البلد الذي ألقي فيه الخطاب. فقد استمع العرب والمسلمون، المحكومون عموماً بحكام منفردين بالسلطة، إلى الرئيس الأميركي وهو يتحدث إليهم مرتين خلال فترة لا تتجاوز الستة أشهر، كانت الأولى خلال زيارته البرلمان التركي في الربيع.

Is there a doctor in the house? Answer carefully

Last year after writing We have our own heroes, we don’t need other people’s in The National I received an e-mail from a director in the Watani programme that began: “Dear Dr Sultan”. It’s About Time For the Gulf to Have its Own Special Envoy

Around the Arab world, it is just known as the Obama speech. You don’t need to mention in which venue or country it took place. People just know. Arabs and Muslims who have generally been ruled by autocrats have heard the US president Barack Obama speak directly to them twice in a period of six months.
